Prism Engineering was engaged by New Gold to design the replacement of two air-cooled chillers at the New Afton Mine in Kamloops, BC.

As part of this upgrade, Prism needed to account for the ambient conditions, space constraints, controls and design loads. Discussions with suppliers and technical reviews were conducted to determine chiller options to minimize maintenance costs and maximize longevity, system efficiency and energy savings.

An innovative low-pressure centrifugal water-cooled chiller option was selected. The system integrates an existing fresh water supply into the chillers’ condenser loop. The new chillers, which have been operational since November 2020, will reduce the mine’s electrical energy consumption by approximately 1.2 GWh per year.
