Challenge

Leveraging the CleanBC Custom-Lite feasibility program, Prism led the study, detailed design, engineering construction support, implementation and commissioning support for converting the existing gas fired rooftop units to a hybrid gas and electric heat pump system at Jessie Lee Elementary School.

Solutions

The solution identified and designed by Prism consisted of replacing all the gas fired rooftop units with dual fuel heat pump type units. This solution provided the following benefits:

  • Cost of operating the equipment was unchanged from previous equipment
  • Only a 10% increase in retrofit costs (after incentive) compared to like-for-like replacement
  • Up to 75% reduction in GHG emissions can be achieved

Results

The project was commissioned in September 2020. During its first winter of operation, Jesse Lee Elementary greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by 50%. The following figure displays the winter 20/21 gas consumption compared to previous years.
